چکیده
Abstract. The aim of paleoclimate studies resolving climate variability from noisy proxy records can in essence be reduced to a statistical problem. challenge is extract meaningful information about these by reducing measurement uncertainty through combining measurements for proxies while retaining the temporal resolution needed assess timing and duration variations parameters. In this study, we explore limits compromise testing different methods data (smoothing, binning, sample size optimization) on particularly challenging problem: seasonal stable isotope records. We test evaluate effects changes temperature hydrological cycle as well accretion rate archive parameters such sampling age model reliability seasonality reconstructions based clumped oxygen analyses 33 real virtual datasets. Our results show that strategic combinations significantly improve accuracy compared conventional analyses, especially settings which isotopic composition water poorly constrained. Smoothing using moving average often leads an apparent dampening cycle, reconstructions. A optimization protocol yields more precise than smoothing. However, most accurate are obtained monthly binning data, cases growth or cycles obscure cycle. analysis wide range natural situations reveals effect almost invariably exceeds composition. Autogenic geomorphic processes determine the resolution and fidelity of terrestrial paleoclimate records Brady
Terrestrial paleoclimate records rely on proxies hosted in alluvial strata whose beds are deposited by unsteady and nonlinear geomorphic processes. It is broadly assumed that this renders the resultant time series of terrestrial paleoclimatic variability noisy and incomplete. We evaluate this assumption using a model of oscillating climate and the precise topographic evolution of an experimenta...
متن کاملOptimizing Sampling-based Entity Resolution over Streaming Documents
Increasingly, organizations have employed methods to understand unstructured text across the web. Entity resolution is used to identify mentions in large, streaming text corpora. Sampling-based entity resolution using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques guarantees convergence to a stationary distribution and can jump out of a local optimum. When performing entity resolution over streams ...
متن کاملOptimizing sampling strategies for perfusion quantification using PASL
Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) techniques potentially allow the absolute, non-invasive quantification of brain perfusion. This can be achieved either by fitting a kinetic model to the data acquired at a number of inversion times (TI) or by applying the model to a single TI assuming values for all other parameters. The accuracy of the model estimation strongly depends on the distribution of the TI...
متن کاملSampling strategies and resolution in limited data cone-beam tomography
This paper concerns cone-beam tomography from limited data. Cone-beam tomography is a technique used to visualize the interior of a three-dimensional (3-D) object in a non-invasive way. This technique involves two steps. In the first step, measurements called cone-beam projections are taken. In the second step, digital signal processing techniques are used to process the measurements to form a ...
متن کاملApplication of dynamic programming to the correlation of paleoclimate records
[1] Signal matching is a powerful tool frequently used in paleoclimate research, but it is enormously timeconsuming when performed by hand. Previously proposed automatic correlation techniques require very good initial fits to find the correct alignment of two records. A new technique presented in this paper utilizes dynamic programming to find the globally optimal alignment of two records. Geo...
